Welcome to
Breckenridge Sights!

Breckenridge is home to the Breckenridge Ski Resort. The town of Breckenridge is also the county seat of Summit County, Colorado. Breckenridge has a designated historic district, to preserve the history and character of the town, that is the largest in the state of Colorado. Jack Nicklaus designed the public golf course for the town. It has a 69,000 square foot recreation center that offers tennis, racquetball, basketball, climbing walls, exercise programs, softball fields, swimming pools, and a skateboard park. The open space of the park around the recreation center offer a free summer kayak park in the Blue River. It is the longest kayak practice whitewater in the state. Breckenridge is built at an elevation of 9,600 feet. It has a year round population of several thousand, but that can swell by nearly ten times during peak tourism periods of the year.

Several museums grace the historic district of Breckenridge. The Barney Ford House Museum is the preserved home of an escaped slave who moved west and became an affluent and distinguished citizen of Colorado. The Edwin Carter Museum is named after a gold miner from New York who became a noted naturalist of his time. Edwin Carter’s collection of artifacts eventually evolved into the establishment of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. His collection was turned over to the museum upon Mr. Carter’s death in 1900. The Rotary Snowplow Park in Breckenridge shows off one of five narrow-gauge rotary snowplows that exist today. The one on display in Rotary Park was moved to Breckenridge in the late 1980’s after repairs in Denver. The Red, White, and Blue Firehouse Museum is located at 308 North Main Street. This museum showcases antique fire-fighting gear. The Red, White, and Blue Fire Department came into existence because of a merger of three different fire departments. The Pioneer Hook and Ladder, the Blue River Hose Company, and the Breckenridge Fire Department combined together in 1976 to provide service to a 140 square miles of Summit County, Colorado. The Gaymon Cabin stands across Main Street from the Fire Museum and was built in 1914. It was once home to one of the first newspaper founders in the area. The Summit County Courthouse, located at 208 Lincoln Avenue, was dedicated in 1910. It is the crowning dome structure that catches the eye. You can see the shining dome from different areas of the city. The Breckenridge Welcome Center on Main Street offers information for visitors and history of the town. It sits next to the Blue River Plaza sculptures at 203 South Main Street. It has over 4,000 square feet and was opened in 2006. Breckenridge is the location of the Summit County Justice Center. It has one library and an outdoor amphitheater at Riverwalk Center.

The Breckenridge Ski Resort is a commanding and beautiful presence over the city. The resort opened for business in 1961. It has nearly 150 ski runs. The longest run is called the Four O’Clock at three-and-a-half miles in length. Fifty percent of the ski terrain is classified for intermediate skiers. Expert trails make up about thirty-five percent of the ski runs. This includes the Imperial Bowl at almost 13,000 feet in elevation. You can get to the Imperial Bowl by way of the highest chair lift in the United States. Beginner ski runs make up the rest of the terrain—mostly on Peaks 8 and 9. The Breckenridge Ski Resort has almost thirty lifts in total. Seven of these are high-speed quad lifts. In 2006, the gondola lift was added to help move skiers up to the mountains. Parking is below in the valley. The gondola holds eight people at a time and carries them up to the base ski areas of several of the peaks. There are five Terrain Parks at Breckenridge. Transworld Magazine named Breckenridge as one of the best pipes for the year in 2006. The base ski elevation at Breckenridge is 9,600 feet with elevation at the top peak of 12,998 feet. This gives the Breckenridge Ski Resort a vertical rise of nearly 3,400 feet. Most tourists arrive at Denver International Airport and arrange a shuttle van ride up to Breckenridge and the other Summit County ski resorts of Keystone, Copper Mountain, and Arapahoe Basin--as well as Vail Ski Resort in Eagle County.
